Can I take my dog on public transport in Victoria?

On both metro and V-Line trains, trams, and buses, small dogs are allowed in crates with suitable ventilation and space for the animal to comfortably stand up, lie down and turn around.

Larger dogs can travel on metro trains, as long as they’re on a lead and wearing a muzzle. You are responsible for cleaning up after your dog and keeping it under control at all times. Owners must also ensure their dog does not block seats, aisles or doors, and avoid travelling during peak hours.

Animals are NOT allowed on V-Line coaches, unless they are a service dog.

Can I take my dog on public transport in New South Wales?

Pets may be allowed to travel on buses, ferries, light rail and in a taxi if confined to a crate, however, permission is still required by staff or the driver.

No pets are allowed on trains, at stations, on coaches or at coach stops.

Can I take my dog on public transport in Queensland?

You will need an approved Assistance Animal Pass if you wish to travel with a pet on TransLink buses, trains, trams and ferries.

However, you can travel with your pet dog on Brisbane River ferries and CityCats between 8.30am – 3.30pm and 7pm – 6am weekdays, and all weekend.

Before you take your dog on a ferry ensure that:

  • it’s on a lead and wearing a muzzle, or in an enclosed carrier
  • it’s under your control and remains outside the ferry cabin
  • you carry waste bags and clean up after your dog.

Can I take my dog on public transport in the ACT?

Accredited service dogs wearing a lead and identifiable coat are allowed on buses and light rail vehicles within the Transport Canberra network. Dogs confined to a crate are permitted on light rail services and buses with the driver’s permission.

Other states

Only accredited assistance dogs are allowed on public transport in Adelaide, Perth, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory .

*Note that service dogs are the exception to most rules and are allowed everywhere. Just make sure you have your certification available for inspection on request.
